Biography:
Jenny Nelson grew up in rural Connecticut. She has been painting
and drawing since the age of seven when she was placed in an
accelerated program for art. She has continued this exploration
throughout her life, receiving a scholarship to the Lacoste School
of the Arts in France through Bard College, where she received her
BFA. Jenny has been living and painting in Woodstock, NY for 12
years and has exhibited widely in the New England and Hudson Valley
areas, including the Coffey Gallery in Kingston, NY and the Carrie
Haddad Gallery in Hudson, NY.
Artist Statement:
As with any attempt to tell a story, it is necessary to begin with
a rough draft. The first draft of a painting is made up of my
initial attempts to create shapes. I begin with loose lines. The
first layer is usually very unconscious and free flowing to build a
foundation from which a composition can grow. As the painting
progresses, I try to maintain the feeling of these first
unconstrained brush strokes, finding a balance between areas of
movement and areas of rest. Each painting has three to ten layers.
In this way each piece has a history of various compositions
underneath it, which may have existed for weeks or merely hours.
During these different phases I find myself in lively conversations
with the canvas, focusing on the juxtaposition of shapes and the
relationship between the colors. I am then drawn to think beyond
what I see as an established edge and to destroy existing shapes,
making drastic changes to the canvas. It is sometimes the
destruction of planned forms that stimulates my interest. This
layering effect allows surprises and accidents to occur.
Many of my final images evoke the memory of objects or spaces I have
seen, for example the reflection of light through windows or the
faded wall of my childhood bedroom. These incomplete,
half-recollected fragments of visual memories provide a well of
imagery for me to access. Layers of pigment and the movement and
energy of a series of brush strokes can fulfill my desire to revisit
these simple, yet significant memories.
