Stevan
Jennis'
work imbues commonplace imagery with irony and contradiction. His paintings are narrative and portray domestic scenes as well our solar system, other galaxies, fantastical oceans or bizarre still
life's. It is difficult to tell if Jennis is nostalgic for the simplicity of life in the 50's or neatly satirizing high-tech science and the isolation of the modern age.
Critic David Kaufman writes, "Regardless of the medium, Jennis's work is seen as lyrical, whimsical, playful and idiosyncratic. It evokes in the viewer a highly personal childhood memory. There is a decided element of fantasy in the work, a sensibility that is swiftly captured by a sign above his bathroom mirror - Fiction."
About the creative process Jennis comments, "Creating is like walking into a house you've never been inside of before, and it has a lot of rooms, and each is filled with different objects and funny
little areas. You want to walk through and discover and find out and examine what is in this house."
Jennis is currently represented in a group show "Works on Paper" through August 11 at the Carrie Haddad Gallery. Art critic Rosa Hallenbeck writes, "Stevan Jennis large fantasy works will delight you with their joyful portrayal of images from a baby boomer's school days: In one piece a fish head on a plate is imbued with muted colors as it sits alongside a bowl of vegetables. In another a whimsical solar system revolves next to a child-like animal constellation, and in a third, a nuclear family and pet hang below a doll-like head floating in a sky of bright red and blue and surrounded by atoms. The sea plays yet another part of Jennis' works with imagery reminiscent of the 1950s. Fun and fanciful, Jennis has captured the celebration of a world viewed through a child's eye."
Stevan Jennis grew up in California and received a BFA at San Fernando Valley College; MA at University of CA, Los Angeles, and MFA at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, MA. He currently lives in Red Hook , NY with his wife and daughter.
Jennis's work has been the subject of numerous solo and group exhibitions in New York and nationally since 1972. His work is in various collections including; Newark Museum, Neuberger Museum, Lowe Art Museum, Fl, Washington and Jefferson College, PA, Chase Manhattan Bank ABC Inc. and Prudential Insurance Company.
