Carrie Haddad Gallery is proud to present Visions From the
Outsider as its next exhibit opening January 8th, 2004 and ending
February 15th. An opening reception will be held Saturday, January
10th, from 6-8pm. Visions From the Outsider features Outsider Art,
Visionary Art, and Folk Art works from artists of the Hudson
Valley and beyond.
Outsider Art is one of many widely-debated terms used to describe
art that is created apart from the mainstream art world; work by
people who have received no formal training and are not aware of
the history of art. It is often characterized by a use of unusual
materials and subject matters and is prized for its refreshing
originality. While sharing a lack of formal artistic training,
folk art is distinguished from outsider art in that it is inspired
by a heritage, using techniques and materials passed down through
generations. Visionary art is the term used to describes artwork
that is created with a spiritual or religious inspiration.
The show features artists with a wide range of experiences. A vast
body of work made from 1954 to 1970 by Russian born
Joseph Garlock was packed away after
his death and not discovered until 1995 at his daughter's home in
Woodstock. A perfect example of an outsider artist, his work was
produced with a wide variety of media, from paintings on the backs
of posters and pie tins to carved tree limbs. Local artist
Bruce Anderson works exclusively with
ironing boards, on which he paints or burns into wood, bold
portraits of religious figures. The quilts of
Elizabeth Spirig combine an old
technique with new designs. Retired businessman and veteran
Mark Olshansky has chosen to work
with needlepoint, creating abstract tapestries.
Not all of the artists featured in the exhibit are folk or
outsider artists; many have had years of formal art training and
have shown at prestigious galleries, but Haddad has included
them because their work is not typically classic and their
materials and presentation is
unorthodox. Caroline Golden's eerie
and whimsical collages seem to tell a story. Her latest series,
Dwellings, suggests the comforts as well as the dangers of the
places where we find shelter. Howard
Crouch's works of nature or the universe are painted over
deeply gouged wood.
With over a dozen participating artists, Visions From the Outsider
should have something for everyone.
The Carrie Haddad Gallery is located at 622 Warren Street in
Hudson, NY. Gallery hours are 11-5pm Thursday through Monday. For
