Painting Show at CARRIE HADDAD GALLERY
AUGUST 5 to SEPTEMBER 12
Owner Carrie Haddad has a passion for abstract painting and
has assembled an exhibit of contemporary works by some of her
favorite painters. Patterned, lyrical, angular or subdued, there
will be something for everyone as they view new abstract works by
Jean Tate, Betsy Weiss, Sarah Berney, Gina
Occhiogrosso, Claire Lofrese, and Katherine Parker.
"Painting" opens August 5th and runs through September 12th. A
reception for the artists will take place on Saturday, August 7th
from 6-8pm. All are welcome.
Sarah Berney’s luminescent oils are
painted on untreated canvas, giving a diffuse edge to the blocks
of color, over which drips and swirls are superimposed. Originally
a figurative painter, Berney feels
that the transition to abstraction gave her work a sophistication
and expressiveness which she did not find in the more limiting
realm of figurative art.
Gina Occhiogrosso finds inspiration
for her work from her experience as a cake decorator. Her bold
works display a strong awareness of the physicality of paint, as
well as a depth that is often difficult to achieve when working in
the abstract. Patterns and shapes repeat and morph themselves
throughout her paintings, creating a sense of motion.
The work of Jean Tate blends
precision and symmetry with amorphous abstraction. Her acrylic
paintings are covered with blocks of raised squares made up of
swirling neutral colors which mimic the background on which they
rest. Also geometric in nature are the often enormous oils of
Katherine Parker. Rectangles with
uneven edges dominate her work, in a palette that ranges from
somber blacks and grays to brilliant red and yellow. Scribbled
words add emphasis and illustrate the titles of her pieces; the
word “BOOM” appears in the ominously titled “Trigger.”
Moodiness reigns in the tumultuous black-and-white paintings of
Betsy Weiss. Staring at them is like
taking a Rorschach test: undefined figures and shapes encourage
viewers to impose their own ideas upon them. Weiss intends her
work to be interpreted subjectively like dreams.
Claire Lofrese will be showing works
made up of several panels. Her medium is oil on paper, and the
neutral palette she employs evokes a contemplative response.
The Upstairs Photo Gallery will feature C-Prints by
Gabriela Cifuentes. Cifuentes uses
blurry light to add a subjectivity and expressiveness to her
jewel-like shots of the interiors of abandoned houses. The
paradoxical combination of clarity and fuzziness
lends a magical quality to the aptly named Abandoned Eden series.
The show will run from August 5 to September 12. An opening
reception will be held at the gallery on Saturday, August 7 from 6
to 8pm.
Carrie Haddad Gallery is located at 622 Warren Street in Hudson,
NY. Gallery hours are Thur-Mon 11-5.
