Painted Cities:

Painted Cities Show at CARRIE HADDAD GALLERY SEPTEMBER 16 to OCTOBER 24

Carrie Haddad Gallery is proud to present the annual Painted Cities exhibition. This year the gallery will be featuring the work of Bill Artim, Paul Chojnowski, Margaret Crenson, James Gurney, Arthur Hammer, Seth Nadel, Dan Rupe, and Tina Sotis, as well as the photography of Joan Barker. As implied by the name, all artists will be exhibiting paintings of scenes from cities large and small, from our own Hudson to New York City.

Despite sharing a common theme, each of the artists will be presenting very unique work. Perhaps the most unusual are the burnt paper works of Paul Chojnowski, the only artist in the show not painting with oil. Chojnowski works off of photos or his own memory to paint an image on thick paper with water. He then uses a blowtorch to burn all areas of the paper not previously protected by water. The result is an image that resembles a photo transfer, with color gradations from white through brown to black, almost like a sepia print.

Viewers will know James Gurney better as the illustrator of the popular children’s book Dinotopia, but he is actually dedicated to painting contemporary Hudson River School landscapes. Included in this exhibition are a few of his highly realistic paintings of towns in the Hudson Valley. Another artist depicting local scenes is the Hudsonite Dan Rupe, whose glowing, impressionistic palette and distinctive red signature should be familiar to Hudson regulars.

On the other end of the city spectrum are Seth Nadel’s views of Time Square. Busy and motion-filled, they show the New York everyone knows, with taxis whizzing by and people crowding the streets beneath enormous billboards.

As always, this active, colorful exhibit will have something for everyone, displaying both the serenity and excitement we find in the places we live, be they large or small. Seen through the eyes of this varied group of artists, cities hold familiar sights and new surprises.

The exhibition will run from Sept. 16 to Oct. 24. A reception for the artists will be held at the gallery on Saturday, Sept. 18 from 6 to 8pm. All are welcome to attend. Carrie Haddad Gallery is located at 622 Warren Street in Hudson, NY. The gallery is open Thursday through Monday from 11a.m. to 5p.m. For more information, call (518) 828-1915.
