Landscapes and Still Lifes:

Landscape and Still Life Show at CARRIE HADDAD GALLERY - OCTOBER 28 to DECEMBER 4

In celebration of the onset of Autumn, Carrie Haddad Gallery will be presenting an exhibition of landscapes and still lifes by longtime Carrie Haddad exhibitors Jane Bloodgood-Abrams, Judith Lamb, Craig Johns, Laura Von Rosk, and Yolanda Shashaty, as well as photography by Eric Slayton. In a show of opposites, the paintings on display range from realistic to fantastic, with little in between.
The work of Bloodgood-Abrams has long been prized for its resemblance in tone and quality to the work of Hudson River School painters. Golden tones and expressionistic clouds abound in her paintings, often exhibited in elaborate gold or heavy dark frames of the period. Craig Johns creates landscapes that are very realistic and still contain an expressiveness that shows through in the sunlit golds of a field or the rich reflection of trees in a mountain lake. In a total departure from the previous two artists, Laura Von Rosk’s small, delicate oils depict landscapes seen only in the mind’s eye, yet are inspired by actual locations in the Adirondacks. Her paintings exhibit a pleasing symmetry which doesn’t end at the edge of each panel but continues onto the sides of her pieces, so that all visible parts of the work glow with paint that still appears fresh.
Judith Lamb specializes in smooth, vividly colored still lifes that seem almost to continue growing right before the viewer’s eyes. While Lamb’s work is detailed and hyperrealistic, the floral works of Yolanda Shashaty are fantastic and expressionistic, made up of loose, soft brushstrokes.
The Upstairs Photography Gallery will be showing the Glass Eye Series by Eric Slayton. He presents black and white photographs of taxidermied wild animals in dioramas. At a glance, it is impossible to tell that these wild animals are frozen in time and not actually running free in their native habitats. Slayton leaves it to the viewer to draw conclusions about the message of his work and whether it is critical or whimsical.
The exhibition will run from Oct. 28 to Dec. 5. A reception for the artists will be held at the gallery on Saturday, Oct. 30 from 6 to 8pm. All are welcome to attend. Carrie Haddad Gallery is located at 622 Warren Street in Hudson, NY. The gallery is open Thursday through Monday from 11a.m. to 5p.m. For more information, call (518) 828-1915, or go to the website, www.carriehaddadgallery.com.
