This spring, I spent a few days in the company of one of my favorite artists: Julia Whitney Barnes.

Through painting, cyanotype, photogram, and collage, Julia presents detailed kaleidoscopic studies of botany’s visual history.

At the time we met (accidentally on the day of the Flower Moon), Julia’s pieces could be seen across the Hudson Valley: A show at Carrie Haddad Gallery, “It’s Always Sunny Somewhere…” featured new work and new directions by Julia (including darker tea-toned cyanotypes); her long-term installation “Planting Utopia,” on view at the Shaker Heritage Society site in Albany, and a full-circle show at the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center at Vassar College, “The Botanist at Vassar.”
